My name is Vickie Scullard and I am running for Vice President Communication and Students' Union Media. I am 27 years old and in my 3rd year doing a BA in Television and Radio.
Since starting University in 2005, I have thrown myself into student life and have written regular features in Salford Student Direct, such as Google It, and this year I became Music Editor. I am also an active member of Shock Radio, where I was Head of Music for 2 years running, and Almost Famous, where I performed in recent production Bugsy Malone.
Before starting at University, I worked as a Web Designer and Marketing Assistant for 5 years. Here, I developed the skills that are mandatory for the job as VP Communications. You can see examples of my work on my showreel website.
To successfully take on this position of relaying YOUR news, YOUR affairs and YOUR views, it is vital that the Editor in charge has an awareness of not only how any newspaper works, but how YOUR newspaper can give YOU the opportunity to voice opinions and feel a part of your student union.
Being in touch with students is the only way that Student Direct can create a successful publication, and I will actively encourage any budding writer, or someone who just wants to have a go for the first time, to get involved. I am friendly, approachable and enthusiastic and really want to do the best by YOU.
I would like to give any Salford University event the opportunity to have exposure, whether that is a round up of a sports match, events happening in a society or a performance exam from the music students.
Like many of you I live in Student Halls, and plan to get student direct delivered to student accommodation, and highlight the areas where the newspaper is available.
After a successful year, I would like to take Student Direct a step further and look at how to create a more eye catching and professional layout, coupled with content thats primary focus is on SALFORD STUDENTS. I would like to really support both the clubs and societies by creating them each a webpage on the union website, and include information relevant to them. For example, the BUSA results should be on there so that student's first port of call for results is their Student Union website.
I have no political or religious bias that will affect the papers content. And before we think about more pages, we need to concentrate on the 12 we already have. I aim to create a good read, full of Salford university news, student opinions, reviews, debates, and, more importantly: humour!
Salford University has given me a lot in my time here and I'd like you to give me the opportunity to give something back.
